Fashion Merchandising: The Most Essential Do's & Don'ts

By Katie Onson

Covering both style and business, fashion merchandising is a professional endeavor that is all-encompassing. Not only do specialists understand the ongoing trends in the fashion industry, but the savviest business practices as well. It can be difficult to make headway in this industry, but hard work and skill alike can go a long way. Here are the essential do's & don'ts to follow if you want to become involved in fashion merchandising.

DO seek the best education possible. Fashion merchandising is a great field to become involved in, but you must know that school is required to get the most out of it. Fortunately, depending on where you live, you might be close to various institutions that either have fashion majors or are entirely focused on said major. The Fashion Institute of Technology is a great example. Before anything else, the right education must be obtained.

DON'T let the fashion world pass you by. One of the biggest responsibilities of a fashion merchandiser is to be aware of trends in the fashion world. What this does, in theory, is help you pivot so that you can be on top of your game at all times. When you let the fashion world pass you by, you deprive yourself of information that can help you. If you don't know about the latest sweet 16 dresses, for example, how likely are you to sell them?

DO keep presentation in mind. In order to sell clothing, regardless of what it specifically entails, presentation goes a long way. To expand on this, let's say that a salesperson is looking to sell suits for weddings. Chances are that the person in charge of selling such attires will wear a considerably professional attire, one that reflects the retailer. The clothes make the man and this is especially true in the business world.

DON'T let your competition go unnoticed. As a matter of fact, making note of said competition can be the difference maker in the fashion merchandising world. Look at what other stores are doing differently than you. How are they selling their goods and services? Can you make your items more affordable by comparison so that people will be more likely to shop with you in the future? Questions like these are worth keeping in mind for the future.
